Sucraid is expensive and it’s hard to get. People naturally look for alternatives when something is inconvenient, and that’s where invertase comes in. Invertase is an enzyme that breaks down sucrose into glucose and fructose, much like Sucraid. It is most commonly used in baking and isolated invertase enzymes can be purchased with the goal of breaking down sucrose, either in the context of cooking or digestion. Invertase is also the only cheap, convenient prospective alternative to Sucraid that currently shows any promise. So it makes sense that it gets a lot of buzz within this community - but how promising is it?
On April 11, 2025, a study on invertase as an alternative to Sucraid was published and described invertase as an effective, cheaper alternative to Sucraid. What can be verified as fact is that invertase is much cheaper than Sucraid. For this study specifically, invertase costs were estimated to be £1972 (roughly $2,650) per year and Sucraid costs were estimated at £51,938 (roughly $70,000) per year. Invertase is certainly much cheaper, and the study also showed other promising data. Of 9 patients with diarrhea tested, invertase reduced the frequency of diarrhea significantly in 4/9, moderately in 4/9, and not at all in 1/9. This means 8 of the 9 children tested had an improvement in stool frequency and consistency, which is very promising. This study was not controlled - meaning variables like enzyme dosing and diet were not the same for all patients, which can weaken results. As part of the experiment, invertase was stopped by 7 of the 9 patients and diarrhea returned or worsened in all 7 patients, then when invertase was reintroduced, their symptoms improved again. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that invertase can reduce the frequency of loose stools and improve stool consistency in some patients.
However, we cannot jump to any conclusions beyond improvements in stool frequency and consistency. The study uses a “global clinician assessment” to report the improvements of other symptoms, which is a subjective assessment of symptom severity by patients and clinicians - much less reliable. Before invertase, 7/9 patients had bloating, 5/9 had abdominal pain, 3/9 had flatulence, and 3/9 had urgency. There was no data reported specifically on these symptoms after invertase - only the “global clinician assessment” that combined all symptoms into a single score for each patient. Therefore, this study provides no compelling evidence that invertase improves symptoms of sucrase deficiency aside from improvements in stool frequency and consistency, but the data provided here is certainly promising and warrants further research.
There is an older study on the mechanism behind invertase that proves it does break down sucrose into glucose and fructose - so the mechanism is legitimate. However, the variable that we need to question is the delivery of the enzyme. The biggest difference between Sucraid and invertase is that Sucraid has been clinically studied, standardized, and approved as a way to carry out sucrose hydrolysis (breakdown) - invertase has not been validated in this way. This also means certain brands that manufacture invertase may work better than others and we don’t know how other factors like storage conditions or dosage amount may affect a given batch of invertase. Overall, it is not proven that an invertase supplement, at a given dose, taken with a given meal, will work predictably as a replacement for Sucraid.
Does this mean invertase is useless? Absolutely not. If you can’t get Sucraid, you can certainly consider invertase as a possible alternative and see how much it helps you, especially if you’re dealing with loose stools. But don’t expect it to be a one-to-one alternative for Sucraid.
